Dear Mother,

At first I would like to say: “I miss you so much.” We have not seen each other for a long time. I can easily remember your smile, please make sure you are happy. I’m OK now, so don’t worry about me. If you have a good life, I’m satisfied.

You must want to know something about my new life in the military camp. There are many soldiers from different parts of America and some foreign soldiers. We are sharing a tent with any other soldiers. And we are going through the same ups and downs every day. We think we are real brothers. Although the life here is tough, we feel happy. We are sharing stories together when we miss our family.

You know, I am fighting for the North. The North represents freedom and justice, so I firmly believe that the final victory belongs to us. It was excited that the congress passed a document on July 17, it about freeing slaves who had masters in the Confederate army. It means if you joined the Confederate army, you are no longer a slave. We are happy that we were treated equally. Mom, I am loyal to fight for the North. Because I think the North is able to establish a peaceful and powerful country when the Civil War finish. I am sad because my battle companions died in the last battle. I think the war is very cruel; we don’t want to fight anymore when we finish this war.

That’s it. I want to see you soon.

With love
